How to Crochet a Blanket: The Complete Beginner's Guide to Your First Throw

Crochet blankets are the most searched crochet project on Google — consistently peaking at 95 out of 100 on Google Trends, especially through autumn and winter. And it's easy to understand why. A handmade blanket is one of the most meaningful things you can make — it's used every day, it tells a story, and it lasts for decades. If you've been putting off making your first crochet blanket because it feels too big or too complicated, this guide is going to change your mind.

Why a Blanket Is Actually a Great First Big Project

Blankets look impressive, but they're worked in exactly the same stitches as smaller projects — just more of them. Once you know how to single crochet or double crochet (the two most common blanket stitches), you essentially just keep going until it's the size you want. There are no complicated shaping rows, no seaming pieces together, no counting increases and decreases round by round. In many ways, a beginner blanket is easier than an amigurumi.

Choosing Your Blanket Size

Before you start, decide what size you're making. Common crochet blanket sizes are: Lapghan (approx 36 x 48 inches) — a smaller throw for one person, quick to complete and perfect for a first project. Throw blanket (approx 50 x 60 inches) — the classic sofa blanket size. Full bed blanket (60 x 80 inches or larger) — a serious project that takes weeks but is incredibly rewarding.

For your first blanket, we strongly recommend starting with a lapghan. You'll finish it faster, stay motivated, and the result is still genuinely useful and beautiful.

Choosing the Right Yarn for a Blanket

Chunky yarn (category 5–6) is the best choice for beginner blankets — it works up fast, the stitches are easy to see, and you get a cosy, substantial result. Pair with a 6mm–10mm hook depending on the specific yarn.

Worsted weight (category 4) takes longer but gives more drape and a lighter result. Great for throws that will be used in warmer weather. Use a 5mm–6mm hook.

Choose machine-washable yarn — a blanket will need frequent washing and handwash-only yarn is impractical. Lion Brand Pound of Love, Paintbox Simply Chunky, and Lion Brand Thick and Quick are all excellent choices.

The Best Beginner Blanket Stitches

Single crochet (sc) — creates a dense, firm fabric. Warm and substantial. Slower to work but very satisfying.

Double crochet (dc) — works up twice as fast as single crochet. Creates a slightly more open, drapey fabric. Most popular for throws.

Popcorn stitch — adds beautiful three-dimensional texture. Our popcorn stitch blanket pattern is one of the most striking beginner-friendly blanket projects in our shop. The bobbles of raised stitches create a gorgeous tactile surface that looks far more complex than it is.

Granny square blanket — work individual squares and join them. Great if you want to use multiple colours or work in small, satisfying sessions. Our 500+ granny square bundle gives you endless square options for a truly unique blanket.

How Much Yarn Do You Need?

As a rough guide for a standard throw (50 x 60 inches): chunky yarn needs approximately 800–1200 yards, worsted weight needs approximately 1500–2000 yards. Always buy slightly more than you think you need — running out of a dye lot mid-blanket is one of the most frustrating things in crochet. Check that all your yarn balls have the same dye lot number.

Keeping Your Edges Straight

The most common beginner mistake in blanket making is gradually gaining or losing stitches, which makes the edges wavy or uneven. To avoid this, count your stitches at the end of every row for the first ten rows. Place a stitch marker at the first and last stitch of each row so you never accidentally skip the edge stitches. Once you've got the rhythm, you can count less frequently.

Finishing Your Blanket

Once your blanket reaches the desired size, work a simple border to neaten the edges. A single crochet border all the way around — working three single crochets into each corner — takes less than an hour and makes a huge difference to the finished look. Weave in all your yarn ends securely, then wash and block the blanket to even out the stitches.
